Birthday Chill

Denver, CO:

Another year around the sun and I am thankful for everything! Since the beach bodies are still baking, we opted to go back to winter to explore a city still experiencing some cold weather. Though we didn't make it to the mountains or any ski town, we still had a blast in the great city of Denver.

Oddly enough, we managed to snag nonstop flights from CLT --> DEN for a pretty decent price and at the times we wanted. The airport is pretty large in my opinion. Keep in mind that the gates and baggage claim are separate so once you have deplaned, a shuttle train is required to get to your bags if checked. Same thing on the return. Once you have checked-in and cleared security, a train is needed to take you to all gates. The normal security line (pandemic still occurring), was pretty lengthy but went fast. The TSA Pre-Check line (my favorite line) had 3 people in it so going through here was a breeze. Denver is 2 hours behind our hometown so going and getting the hours back is always a treat but coming back home is tiring to adjust to the timezone change. Either way, the trip was worth the trek across the country and we got to visit some pretty cool places, several of which were some of the top places to visit in Denver. Since we weren't sure of the terrain, instead of renting a car, we decided to use share rides to/from the airport and around town. All in all, we spent a little over $100 in rides.

The airport rides varied in price to downtown. We caught an Uber from DEN for ~$40 and a scheduled Lyft to return for the same price. For some reason, Uber's pricing to schedule a return to the airport was twice as much as Lyft so of course we opted for the less expensive version. The trip one way took ~30 mins to our hotel. If share rides aren't in your budget, there is a train (the A Line) that runs from the airport that makes stops along the route to Union Station. Since this was several blocks from our hotel, the Grand Hyatt Denver, Uber/Lyft rides suited us better.

One cool thing about our hotel location was the proximity to a few of Denver's main attractions. First up being the 16th Street Mall. This is a street that is lined with a variety of shops, bars, and social activities for your interest. It's fairly long in distance so there is a free mall ride shuttle that will take you from end to end. We walked because we wanted to take in the sights.

After the 16th Street Mall, you will run across the historic Larimer Square. It's a cross street with more places to eat and shops that are a must see. One of which, we stumbled across by chance and it quickly turned in to one of our favorite places. We sat for hours and listened to live music and had a few cocktails. Read about our visit in the blog - Larimer Records Cafe. You don't want to miss the details on this one.

Heading further in the same direction, you will eventually run into Union Station. This is the train depot that is a staple in the city. Not only can you catch a train to and from, there are cute shops, bars, and even a hotel if you need to stay the night. We didn't spend much time here but it was worth the visit to feel the vibes.

We walked several blocks and circled back around to Coors Field. This day there was a game against the NY Mets. We got to get pretty close up the the field and crowd but we didn't get tickets because we were not sure of the weather. Did I mention it snowed the day we arrived and the next 2 days? We weren't risking having to potentially sit in the cold for the game but the joke was on us because the day ended up being absolutely beautiful!
