Exploring Tampa: A Memorable Stay at the JW Marriott on Water Street

Tampa, Florida

A few weeks ago, we embarked on an unforgettable trip to Tampa, Florida, and stayed at the luxurious JW Marriott on Water Street. With its prime location in the heart of the city, the JW Marriott not only offered us stunning waterfront views but also provided the perfect base for exploring the rich history and vibrant culture of the city. From Ybor City's historic charm to the artisan cigar shops like JC Newman and Grand Cathedral Cigars, our Tampa trip was full of exciting discoveries. Here's a rundown of our adventures. First how we got there ---> Non-stop flights from CLT to TPA. RT cost was ~$400 per person and once we booked AA offered us FC class seats for $100/pp so you know we had to hop on that. The airport was busy and despite having priority check-in, we still had to wait and the Pre-Check line was crazy long BUT it went super fast. We settled in the lounge and then headed to our gate. Our flight ended up being delayed a few times but eventually we were on our way. We caught a beautiful sunrise while we waited.

A Luxurious Stay at JW Marriott on Water Street

Our home for the trip was the JW Marriott Tampa, situated on Water Street, one of Tampa's most exciting up-and-coming areas. This sleek hotel exudes modern elegance, with spacious rooms offering sweeping views of the Tampa skyline and Hillsborough Bay. The hotel’s number of onsite dining options, rooftop pool and bar were among the highlights.

Check out our room tour here: Superior Corner Spa/Waterview - 1 King Bed/605 sq ft

We booked a regular king room and since we arrived early our room was not ready. At check-in we were offered an upgrade at NO CHARGE which ended up being the room I originally wanted to book but <cough, cough>, did not want to pay the price. Either way the room gods were with us and we got what I wanted for free. Great blessings follow us wherever we go!

Why JW Marriott?

  • Unbeatable location near Tampa's main attractions

  • Lavish amenities like the rooftop infinity pool

  • Exquisite dining at the on-site restaurants, with locally inspired dishes

  • A perfect blend of luxury and relaxation

The hotel’s proximity to the vibrant Water Street District made it easy to experience some of Tampa's most exciting neighborhoods. Just a short walk from the hotel, we enjoyed the area's trendy shops, outdoor cafes, and lush greenery that has become the hallmark of this new downtown hotspot.

Discovering Ybor City: Tampa’s Historic Gem

Our exploration of Tampa wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Ybor City, known as the heart of the city’s Cuban and cigar-making heritage. Walking through the streets of this historic district was like stepping back in time, with brick-lined avenues and the rich aroma of hand-rolled cigars wafting through the air.

Ybor City’s energy was infectious, and the fusion of cultures was on full display through its food, music, and art. It’s a must-see for anyone looking to experience the heart of Tampa.

Our first stop was to the Columbia Restaurant. People raved about this place and Thomas was trying to recreate a time where he had a cuban sandwich in Miami. We were told this place was where to go but he rated it a 5/10. All in all the restaurant was a historic sight and dining in the presence of all of the history was enough for me. Will we return? Likely not but give it a shot if you are up for some authentic cuban food.

Must-Visit Spots in Ybor City:

  •  7th Avenue: Ybor City's main street, lined with Cuban restaurants, bars, and shops.

  •  Columbia Restaurant: A historic Cuban restaurant dating back to 1905.

  •  Centro Ybor: This historic building houses a variety of entertainment venues, from theaters to quaint shops. I managed to snag 2 vintage bags from a thrift shop that I can't wait to use for the fall.

Cigar Aficionado's Dream: JC Newman

Our next stop took us to JC Newman for a tour and an activity that I booked to celebrate his birthday. For cigar enthusiasts and Thomas is one, Tampa is a haven, and we couldn’t miss the opportunity to visit two iconic cigar spots: JC Newman Cigar Company and Grand Cathedral Cigars.

Located just outside of Ybor City, JC Newman is America’s oldest family-owned premium cigar manufacturer. During our visit, we took a guided tour through the factory and learned about their history and the intricate process of hand-rolling cigars. The passion and craftsmanship that goes into each cigar were evident, and we left with a newfound appreciation for the art of cigar making. We also got the chance to hand roll our own cigars. What a treat! We were able to roll and keep 5 cigars from our visit to take home. I would highly recommend a visit here if you are in to cigars and want to see up close how the process works.

Highlights:

  • A walk through the historic factory, where cigars are still rolled by hand.

  • An in-depth look at their famous El Reloj cigar.

  • Hand rolling our very own cigars.

  • A chance to purchase exclusive cigars from their on-site shop.

Tours to Check out:

Cigar Rolling Class - 1h 15m - $75 per person

Tobacco Tasing Class - 1h 15m - $50 per person

Guided Factory Tour - 1h 15m - $15 for Adults

Grand Cathedral Cigars

Just a short drive from downtown, Grand Cathedral Cigars is a cigar lounge like no other. Situated in a repurposed cathedral, the atmosphere was truly one-of-a-kind. We spent the afternoon lounging in their opulent space, sipping on fine whiskey, and enjoying premium cigars. The blend of classic architecture and luxurious finishes made this one of the most unique spots we visited. The building itself is stunning, with its high ceilings and stained glass windows. The lounge offers a wide selection of cigars, including rare and boutique brands. Its peaceful escape, ideal for unwinding with a cigar and a drink.

Exploring Water Street and Downtown Tampa

Back near the JW Marriott, Water Street is a vibrant and modern area transforming into one of the city’s most exciting districts. With new restaurants, green spaces, and waterfront views, it’s the perfect place to take a leisurely walk or grab a bite to eat. The urban design seamlessly integrates Tampa's history with cutting-edge architecture, making it both a cultural and scenic highlight.

What to Do on Water Street:

  • Trolley Ride - Hitch a FREE trolley ride to Ybor City and back. Beware - there is no AC and they move slower when on board. From Water Street to Ybor City was about 20 minutes with the stops but hey we skipped the Uber this time for the experience.

  • The Aquarium - Walking distance from the hotel and Water Street attractions.

  • Sparkman Wharf: A hip outdoor dining and entertainment space with food trucks, craft beers, and live music. We loved trying local dishes and catching the sunset over the water.

  • Tampa Riverwalk: Stretching along the Hillsborough River, this scenic path is perfect for an evening stroll. It connects you to the Tampa Museum of Art, Amalie Arena, and several parks.

  • Cruise Ports: If you're looking for adventure beyond the city, the nearby cruise ports offer trips to the Caribbean, making Water Street a gateway to the Gulf of Mexico.

Final Thoughts: Tampa’s Unique Blend of Culture, Luxury, and History

Our trip to Tampa was the perfect balance of relaxation and cultural immersion. Staying at the JW Marriott on Water Street allowed us to enjoy the city in style while offering easy access to the rich history of Ybor City. Whether you're a foodie, a history buff, or simply looking for a luxury getaway, Tampa is a destination that has something for everyone.

Next time you’re planning a trip to Florida, make sure Tampa is at the top of your list – you won’t be disappointed.
