Columbia, SC:
Can't remember the first time I dined at Saluda's in Five Points but I have been a many times since for so many different celebrations. It's always a dining treat. This Friday was a little different. On a quick errand run downtown and in the mood for some fantastic bites, Saluda's was the obvious choice. It was the best decision I made all week.
I started off with a nice glass of MDZ Malbec. I discovered this wine on one of my previous visits and unlike many times before when I sit and stare at the wine list for minutes on end, this time I knew exactly what I wanted. Beautiful, bold, and RED!
Generally, if I am doing a charcuterie board or cheese plate, I do just that with a nicely paired wine however since I was lured by their instagram feed, I couldn't pass on trying the salumi board as an appetizer. It was exceptional! Smaller in size and equipped with meat selections (no cheese), mustard, pickled vegetables, and grilled bread, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this with no cheese pairings. The starter was so good, I had to keep going! :-)
The menu at Saluda's gives you a nice selection for dinner. Not too much and not too little - just right. For me tonight, I wanted to try something new. It was a tough choice between the seared scallops (menu item) or the Fish du Jour (halibut). I went with the halibut and when I say OH M G, it was good! I don't know what I expected but certainly not THIS! Paired with broccolini, a side of rice, and just enough hot sauce (at least some form of a spicy sauce) to tickle your tongue, this dish was just plain good. So happy, I went with this choice! It's really that good!
Finishing up the evening and just over wine at this point (pandemic has me drinking waaay too much RED wine), I wanted something different. Now while, I am not one who enjoys overly sweet cocktails, I do get a kick out of anything that is more on the 'bitter' side with a lemon or lime attached. So a Kentucky Mule (made with boubon) it was! I know many folks love a good Moscow Mule (made with vodka) and there are times when I do to but today I wanted something a little different.
